App Annie believes that 2019 will see mobile games take 60 per cent of worldwide gaming revenue.

The analytics firm made this claim after examining successful cross-platform titles like Fortnite and PUBG.

Taking 60 per cent of the global gaming market would also mean that mobile games have managed to snatch 35 per cent of the market in the last six years.

It would also allegedly cement the handheld medium as a threat to console gaming revenue.

“Games in 2019 will be less siloed and more connected,” said App Annie MD EMEA and senior VP of partnerships Nicolas Beraudo.

“For example, Supercell’s new game Brawl Stars, set to be huge in 2019 is a combination of Clash Royale and Fortnite.

“But mobile isn’t just gaining a bigger piece of the pie, it’s making the pie larger. Monetisation opportunities stand to increase as a result of the increase in cross-platform play as well as the increase in mobile payment adoption.

“The fastest growing form of monetisation in mobile gaming is subscription-based.”

Beraudo also names technology improvements and wide-scale adoption of 5G as critical areas to increase mobile’s prevalence. Battery life, however, remains the sector’s biggest obstacle.
